College Students Share What They’ve Learned

Thoughtful college choices come from more than researching schools. They come from asking good questions, understanding what matters to you, and hearing from people who have recently navigated the choices themselves.

Throughline College Counseling and Karma Impact Fund brought together 11 college students representing nine colleges and universities to share what they’ve learned along the way. I was especially impressed by the honesty and perspective of this group—students who value community, have taken advantage of their college experiences, and continue to explore their interests and academic paths.

The conversation covered why they chose their schools, what surprised them, what prepared them for college, and what advice they would give students beginning the process.

A few themes came through again and again: you don't need to arrive at college knowing exactly what you want to study; take classes in high school that prepare you for college-level work, whether or not you ultimately receive credit; try new things; get involved; and take advantage of the full college experience.

Some of my favorite sentiments centered on the application process itself: there is a college that will want you; pay attention to the schools that show genuine interest in you; and don't view your classmates as competitors for spots at selective colleges. Lift each other up.

At Throughline, we encourage students to look beyond Where can I get in? and think more deeply about Where will I thrive? What matters to me? What do I want from my college experience?
